Hideous day in Melbourne today...
June 3rd 2008 08:59
A ghastly foggy day was had by all in our fair and wondeful southern city.
Fog rolled in about 4am and first off closed Tullamarine Airport. Hundreds of passengers were stranded for hours as flights were diverted, delayed or cancelled.
When the peak hour traffic hit the road it was delayed and blocked for miles around in the poor visibilty and slippery conditions. Accidents were rife and ambulances were kept busy.
Trams, trains and buses struggled with the dark gloomy roads while commuters waited hours for their connections.
At school where I was it was freezing.
As the day progressed it got colder and colder. In some of our barely-heated classrooms and portables it was truly horrific. Students, many poorly equipped in summer dresses, no jumpers, shorts and polo-shirts shivered miserably or tried to tough it out. I asked many where were their winter uniforms or jumpers, to recieve a shrug or blank look.
Apparently families are unable to afford the basic uniforms.
Our faculty had many noisy rehearsals and classes today and what with the noise and cold I ended up with a piercingly horrible headache.
Finished at 4.30 I stumbled home in time to see the setting sun, feed the animals and rev up the heater.
What a God-awful day and more in store for us lucky souls tomorrow.
I just feel like jumping into bed in fleecy pj's and burrowing down deep under the doona with the 'lecy blanky on full!
Hibernation until September sounds good!
How was your day?
