Men are sex-starved and women are shallow
May 22nd 2008 23:32
Course we all know women are vain, shallow creatures given to excessive primping and preening, don't we?
And men of course are self-centred, pompous sex-craved creatures only interested in one thing?
These stereotypes have come down to us through the ages and have been reinforced by actions of both sexes.
But stereotypes is all they are. There are as many different behaviours of people as there are people and men and women are diverse both from each other and from within their own gender group.
In struggling to undertand our world and our lives and our place within it we are still victims of conditioning of the above stereotypes.
In the 'no sex for 12 years' post comments, many many people, presumably modern, informed citizens, have dismissed the men's whinging and complaints as being merely an opportunity to 'hit on me' (charming term ain't it? and an unlikely scenario).
Hardly anyone has agreed and said, yeah marriage can be tricky, or I feel sorry for these men, or yeah, I have heard that stuff and it is a shame, these couples need help, or whatever.
No, men are being judged by their old stereotype which follows them around: they are sex-starved, self-centred, only after one thing.
The implication over and again is these men have probably deserved their sad-sack lives, maybe have neglected their wives or are just desperate and sleazy.
Now, as we agreed, there are 2 sides to every story so clearly they have to take some blame for the failure of their relationships or lives or whatever, but to be judged so summarily? So idsmissively? So, so stereotypically?
And what about women?
If you don't think women want things tjust to be the envy of their friends, then you should hang around the school grounds with some of the mums I have the 'pleasure' of knowing. Or the children's film world, where my son did a stint. Or a suburban pony club in a well-heeled outer suburb. Phew, you'll soon get a different view-point.
These women don't muck around either. You'lll get the third-degree to ascertain your financial/material status; you'll get gimlet-eyes questions on schools, academic progress and extra-curicular activities. Your car/clothes/float/pony/hair-c ut and accent will be assessed.
You could be like me and stir them up, watch their eyes widen at airy achievements. I always casually drop at some stage tit-bits about aspects of my life which sound very glamourous. I then choose a few who are 'down to earth' as friends and sit back and watch the feeding-frenzy with the others, all trying to out-do each other.
Oh yes, I know this is such a stereotype and also only one small aspect of society. But don't try and tell me it does not exist or women are not like that cos boy, do I know better!
Now, I'd better go. The man is coming to replace all my front curtains cos Austrians are so out and finged tassels in; also the house is being painted terracotta to match the paving cos that is all the rage now. Along with a cute little slim-line rain-water tank, metal painted water-saving sign, white pebbles and mondo-grass.
Enjoy your day!
