How much is that doggie in the window???

Two of my friends, spurred on by the sight of Bootling and her dear sweet temperament, have spent today frantically discussing puppies, leafing through puppy and puppy-training books and magazines at my house and ringing around regarding puppies.
Later, as I went about my tasks, I mused over the strange ways of the world. (as one does)
Oh, no doubt these are things you, dearest reader, are always aware of; one part of the world people are arguing of a crust of bread, (oh no, I hear you groan, here she goes again!) while us spoilt women are arguing over which dog to get and which designer kennel it should live in.
And I am not exempt from this cheerful consumer behaviour, or whatever you want to call it, as you well know.
But what is this obsession with pets, or dogs in particular, that we seem to be caught up in?
For my part, I needed another working dog, and I felt the kids wanted the experience of raising a puppy. Bootling has glued us all back together at a time when our family felt a bit fragmented. (you know how it can get sometimes......)
Right now she is racing nuttilly, dripping, around the sitting-room having had an impromptu bath with Michael.
Rose, having consumed three times her body -weight in milk, is seated like a queen on Lisa's lap watching closely 'The Biggest Loser'. They both really like that show.
I suppose it is the desire for something to care for, to need us, to look after and protect, that drives us to seek pets. Bit like our desire, somewhat mis-guided maybe, to have children.
But at least with dogs you can boot 'em out the back and shut the door........
