Kids outa control in my classroom
June 4th 2008 03:30
You've have to wonder who on earth would want to be a teacher after the dreadful morning at my school today.
OK, the kids are notoriously difficult at this socially-disadvantaged and poverty-struck school. But still, one has to make an attempt to teach the little blighters.
One of the classes had a small boy who was seriously out of control. running in and out of the classroom, uttering short shrill noises, refusing to sit still, refusing to do any work.
When threatened with being taken to the principal he tried to operate his expensive state-of-the-art computer, but managed to bring up swear words which were loudly amplified to the rest of the class. We tried to march him down to the office but he buckled under the pressure and ran off up to the third floor, yelling he was goin' home!
I yelled back, "Good. Stay there!" which wasn't politically correct but felt good.
The rest of the class were border-line with issues but we got to recess but were then called to a meeting where we were accused of upsetting this little lad who already had a string of stuff happening at home and had taken refuge in the art room where he was 'very upset' and complained the music staff were 'bullies'.
This got kind of sorted out but left a bad taste in the mouth and just made me think that there is no solution to some of these issues, no matter how understanding we might all be and that in the end teachers were not social workers and really had a duty to the other kids who might just want to learn.
Could tell you more but can see a fight erupting. Gotta go.
