Eight year olds OK with M rated movies?
August 17th 2008 07:26
Michael, who is nine, was invited to a class-mates birthday sleepover. The plan was to see a movie, get some pizza, try to get some sleep. You know the deal.
It all sounded fine, cept this was the kid at school who always bragged about watching the Exorcist or whatever.
Last time my son was there, on an after-school play date, he sat in front of the massive plasma with the child and dad as well and watched Rambo!
I was worried Michael would be exposed to stuff he couldn't handle, so I rang the mother and explained I wasn't that comfortable with little kids watching M or Mplus rated movies.
In fact I felt we were wrong to expose them to it....
The mum said her son couldn't handle G or PG (too boring) and that they were planning to see The Dark Knight. She said her little boy wasn't affected by violence at all and had a very mature outlook.
During playtime this is the same kid who likes to play 'Rambo' all the time. And has to sleep with the light-on. And can't read. But still.....
But some of the other mothers apparently rang also and voiced concerns over the choices of movies, cos by the weekend the choice was down to G or PG.
So much the better, the sleepover went well, the little birthday boy did not die of boredom, cos anyway he took his PSP with him into the cinema just in case....
When they got home he tried to put Rambo on but his mum stopped him...
Still I feel a bit disturbed. This is just an average family, probably one of hundreds, who regularly let their kids watch violent or unsuitable material without having any real idea of how this is affecting them.
It bothers me.
Does it bother you?????

The Dark Knight is totally inappropriate for children. I think it should have an MA 15 classification not just an M. I found the movie chilling and I'm an adult!

Really, i think it's better to use the information of WHY a movie may be offensive, and if in doubt, watch it first. My parents tended to do this. I'd sooner show a kid an M movie with a couple of 'F*** the F****** in it than a pg with a fair bit of beating.
Equally, depends on the kid. I know 18 year olds who can't sit through Dark Knight and 10 year olds who'd love it.
