Naive

February 27th 2008 21:20
I was going to tell you all about the latest on violence towards teachers from my school yesterday, but when we checked our emails last night we had one from 'Microsoft Awards Team' in London. Now, you, you cool surfer of the internet you, have probably heard about this scam for months and months and are well used to such fraudelent claims, but we are not. Call us innocent. Naive. Babes in the wood. It's true, we are very gullible in our tumbledown ruin of a house. But. I was cooking tea, the children were winding around my legs and snarling at each other through hunger as I had been teaching till late and not fed them for ages, and my husand was suddenly all quiet and hunched over his laptop, peering closely and refusing to come to the dinner table. Eventually, across the spilt milk and long recitations of school incidents from the kids, (interspersed with the chooks wandering into the house twice cos the kids left the backdoor open) the presumed dad of the kids admitted he had received an odd email, to which he had responded, and could I glance at it after tea? And yes, dear readers, there it was, telling us we had won a million pounds British sterling blah blah blah. I just said dully, yeah right. The kids looked bemused. Husband rang the number in London. Spoke to an individual for whom English was not his native tongue. Came up with a name like Axxxiom Axxol. We went to bed to rain falling and argued tiredly, dismally about what we would do if we did win that sort of money. The funny thing is, tho you know it is probably a fake and you are being 'toyed' with and made a fool of, (which makes you cross) you can't stop your heart from leaping and your stupid unconsious mind from coming up with all the things you could do with the winnings. My husband said he would invest it to ensure an 'income stream'. I said we would pay the house off so I could feel secure. As I said, we argued irritably, then retreated into our book-reading silence, realising the stupidity of talking about such an unlikely event anyway. This morning I googled Microsoft Award winning Team, which you can do and have probably done, and well, the rest is history. So, back to mundane bill paying and trying to make ends meet. Sigh.
