Selective Schools held their exams today....
June 14th 2008 10:15
Over one thousand girls lined up at these buildings today to sit the entrance exam for the MacRobertons GHS.
Getting the girls inside took 30 minutes of loud speaker instructions and huge held-up number placards.
It was hard for them to force their way through the crowd of watching families which, despite repeated instructions over the PA refused to move back and allow movement.
On the other side of the building the boys were lining up for their equivalent horror stretch for Melbourne High School.
Both of these schools are Victoria's only selective high schools.
Ninety percent of the applicants were of Indian or Chinese descent.
Both schools only take kids who are in the top twenty percent of the state and many of the maths questions were of year 11 standard.
Both schools are government schools but will end up with many private school kids who have had the necessary 'enrichment' classes to cope with the rigorous testing.
Parents will then get top VCE results for no school fees.
How fair is this? Who knows.
It has been my daughter Mattie's first real brush with the realism of life actually being unfair. She has had a bit of a learning curve just preparing for this event.
We are all glad it is over.
You will have to imagine the interior shown above as crammed full of desks for the young candidates. Cheek by jowl as it were.
Anyway, I will let you know in three months what her results are. Anyone thinking of sending their son or daughter down this track think twice, cos the road aint easy!
Tell you about the museum tomorrow!
