Huntsman spider in the car
June 4th 2008 11:14
It was nearly dark.
I had rushed home from school, given my kids afternoon tea, driven one to tutoring and the other to guitar, dropped in at Coles to get some milk, been home to drop that off and feed the myriad of livestock, then jumped into the other car to go and collect eldest from said tutoring.
The fog had moved in around 4pm and it was cold. Cold and dank.
I was stuck in a queue of traffic. Bored. Tired.
You can see by an earlier post that I had had an enjoyable day teaching well-behaved kidlets the rudiments of music in a quiet and civilised manner.
I fiddled with the radio. The traffic started flowing. Idly, I edged forward and for something to do (what could have come over me?) I flipped down my sun visor.
Horror. Horror horror HORRORS!!!!
A massive horrible hairy huntsman spider dropped straight down onto my skirted lap!
I went into overdrive of stress and pure fear.
Slammed on the brakes. Rammed into 'P'. Heard screeching behind me but barely registered it as I threw my door open and jumped out straight into oncoming traffic. I was violently brushing myself down, traffic was swerving with headlights blazing and horns bleating.
I started crying and stood in the road with my door open looking helplessly around for....well, help I guess.
I didn't know what I was doing.
A man stuck behind me jumped out of his van.
"What's up love?"
Incoherently I pointed at my seat where you could see the enormous monster crouched ready to....kill me.
"Ah." He was at once all tact and understanding. I was trembling.
"Let's wait for this lot to go by," he said, indicating the cars which were now irritably swerving around past me, tooting crossly.
"Sorry," I mumbled, some of my fear subsiding as he manfully coaxed the awful 'thing' onto a piece of newspaper and dropped it on the nature strip.
He then brushed my seat out and checked the dash and visors again for me in case of others.
He was so nice! What a hero! I was such a wreck, nearly caused an accident and still silently crying.
When was I going to get over this 'phobia'?
"I thanked him, over and over. Kissed him on the cheek. He got a bit embarassed, said aw shucks, it was nouthin' and drove off into the foggy night.
I went on shakily to collect daughter and now sit here in the semi-dark seeing huntsmans at every turn and under every shadow.
Even putting that image on this post gave me a curdle in my tummy.
Help! Anyone else share this reaction with our lovable huntsperson spider?

OH
MY
WORD!!!
It would have been an ambulance that had to carry me away if that had happened. I have a terrible fear of spiders and am always scared that something like this will happen.
I hope you get over seeing them everywhere!!
