Starvation? Or a new bathroom.......?

Why should I be worrying about the bread riots currently taking place in Egypt? why indeed should any of us? In fact you probably are not, and most of my friends ask me, why do I get so hot and bothered over it?
Who cares?
Where are you going for your next holiday, when are you up-dating your car and are you happy with that new posh girls' school your daughter is at?: these are the most common topics they wish me to focus on.
The world price of wheat is now so high due apparently to the use of grain crops for bio-fuel, drought in Australia and increased food demand from China and India that many developing countries are enduring food riots.
While in Australia there has been much made in the media of rising food prices and we are all having trouble making ends meet, for those in parts of Africa, Egypt and other poorer parts of the globe getting enough bread is becoming a major problem.
Specially if bread is the staple diet.
Sometimes I think we should all forget about the stupid dumb idea of 'global economy' and each country be self-sufficient for itself. 'Cept I know this would never work either.
What is the answer? Is there one?
I can't bear to think of people dying for lack of a loaf of bread when we are so affluent in this wonderful country.
