The Milk of Love

March 28th 2008 10:37
Tentative good news regarding 'Rose', our remaining orphan lamb. Maybe she was lucky and got some 'mother's milk' on the night of the big storm, whatever, she is, as I type, vigorously sucking while Lisa watches 'Mean Girls' on telly.

It is a though Lisa has had a baby though; a weird feeling let me tell you!

Rose spends most of her time in one of those large plastic tubs you can get at Bunnings, nestling on a recently-replenished hot water bottle. Which is wrapped in something 'nice and snuggly' and then on newspaper, which is frequently changed.

Lisa drags the tub and lamb into her bedroom each night and feeds her on demand. She sets her alarm clock for 4am to re-fill the hot water bottle and check for breathing.

If Lisa moves out of the lambs' sight it bleats most piteously.

Each night Lisa prays Rose will llive. Each morning she is beaming when I open her door to check, and says, "She's still alive mum."

After her feed, the lamb loves nothing better than to snuggle up on the sofa next to Gen and the border collie puppy and enjoy a snuggly snooze.

Tis rather an odd business don't you think?

Oh, but do wish us luck, I couldn't bear the alternative.........

We are almost all programmed to care for the young, and most of us are conditioned to it to. L'i'l Lisa is playing out a biological role on a safe substitute for a real baby. And good for her! Learning the rewards of caring is essential to the human condition, and helping one lamb may seem meaningless in a world of billions of sheep, it does a make a difference. As Mother Teresa said "If I had not helped that first person in Calcutta, I would not have helped the many thousands who followed."

There is an old story about two people out for an early morning beach walk after a storm. The beach was little with thousands of dying starfish thrown onto the sand. The first person bent down and picked up one starfish and through it into the sea, thus saving it. "Why did you do that", said the other person, "there are thousands of starfish here, you can't possibly hope to make a difference!" "Well", replied the other, "I made a difference for that one."

The writer's life seems eccentric in the extreme. A worlwind maelstrom vortex surrounds and pervades. Orphaned sheep. Dust storms. Lightning storms. Nicolas Cage. Ghost riders. Surely a great writer is hidden here?

Ghost Riders ... AND ... sailing ... emu eggs .. Thomas Mitchell ... sheep's bums ... violent schoolgrounds .. organised crime ... symphonic concerts ... it can't all be one person! If it is, then we can expect a new Proust.
