WoollyWeather, Lounging Lambs, Chaotic Cursors

April 2nd 2008 05:58
It's been a terrible terrible day weather-wise in Melbourne. Wind so strong it closed Tullamarine Airport. Westgate Bridge closed. Western Freeway closed due to a bad accident. Dust storms in the wheat belt blacking out whole towns. Trees crashing down all over the place. Power lines draped over suburban streets. Lights in the bank and Coles off. Computers not working.

We had the power off for 2 hours; it has just come back on now at 4.45pm.

My son, who has had a passion since yesterday of filling balloons with water and putting them in the freezer to be later 'peeled' and made into 'ice-babies', had a terrible accident earlier.

Once of his balloons burst and spilt all the water directly onto my laptop!

He was so incredibly freaked and panicked by this I didn't have the heart to be cross.

Instead we leapt for the hair-dryer and such things- but off course the power was off!

As you can see by my typing this, it seems to be working ok, tho the cursor has gon a bit wobbly.

Plus there is a big slidy water stain bubbling down the screen: anyone got any advice or ideas???

Michael (son) has been called back to do 'continuation' shots for 'Knowing' and we have received rave reviews from his agency. Apparently he has 'great on-screen presence and is photogenic'. At least the agency actually know who he is now, so that is something.

Rose bleated all night for company but didn't want to suck. She is now curled up alseep on the sofa watching 'Inspector Gadget'. We think she will be a good animal advocate when she grows up, being able to put the human and sheep perspective equally well.

Anyone else out there reared an orphan lamb?

It is not New Orleans and it was not a hurricane, but power outages across the state are creating outrage. With the prospect of the blackout stretching into the weekend in some neighbourhoods, questions are being asked about the privatisation of essential services. As much as the blackout, people are frustrated by their inability to get information from their service providers.

But is the whole problem related to the privatisation of electrical services?

One of the unintended consequences of privatisation, which is profit-driven rather than service-driven. One of the effects was to largely abandon the huge role which the electricity industry used to have in training electricians as apprentices, so that now we have a shortage of electricians who would otherwise been available to help out in an emergency such as this.

And how prepared are companies to cope with more extreme disasters - either natural or man-made?

Amazing facts: water balloons are 98% water!
